As a seasoned marathon runner, I’ve learned that endurance isn’t just about pushing your limits but understanding how to train your body and mind for the long haul. Long-distance running has taught me patience, discipline, and the importance of sustainable progress. One of the most transformative approaches I’ve embraced in recent years has been Zone 2 training—an often understated but incredibly effective method to enhance marathon performance without risking burnout.

Understanding Zone 2: The Foundation of Endurance

Zone 2 training refers to exercising at a pace where conversation flows easily—roughly 60-70% of your maximum heart rate. It’s a pace that may feel slow on race day, but inside it, your body is working efficiently to develop aerobic capacity. Through consistent Zone 2 sessions, I’ve observed a steady increase in my ability to sustain effort over hours, a crucial component in marathon endurance.

The Personal Journey: Building Resilience through Simplicity

When I first incorporated Zone 2 into my training, I struggled with the perceived sluggishness. Long runs at a gentle pace felt almost counterintuitive compared to the thrill of faster intervals. However, over months, I noticed that my fatigue during long runs diminished, and recovery times shortened. It was a lesson in patience: real growth occurs not in bursts of intensity but in the quiet, repetitive effort that rewires your body’s endurance systems.

Practical Lessons for Endurance Athletes

For runners looking to adopt Zone 2 training, my advice is simple: be patient and stay consistent. Use a heart rate monitor to ensure you’re staying within your target zone. Gradually increase your weekly volume, emphasizing quality over speed. The goal is to allow your body to adapt gradually, fostering a robust aerobic engine that can support prolonged effort. Remember, endurance is a marathon—not a sprint.

Broader Reflections: Discipline, Patience, and Growth

In my years of training and racing, I’ve come to see that discipline and patience extend beyond running—they mirror life’s challenges and growth. Zone 2 training teaches us that progress often looks slow, but that consistency builds a foundation resilient enough to handle greater demands. It reminds us that enduring success is rooted in small, sustainable steps, cultivated with patience and purpose.

Ultimately, integrating Zone 2 into my training has reinforced my belief that endurance, whether on the road or in life, depends on the ability to sustain effort over the long term. Patience in training translates into patience in life’s hurdles, and discipline in our pursuits fosters resilience when setbacks occur. Endurance is a mindset, cultivated through dedication and a willingness to embrace the slow, steady journey.

As we lace up for our long runs or face the daily grind, let’s remember that greatness is built in the quiet moments—those that demand patience, discipline, and relentless commitment. Endurance isn’t just about the miles but about cultivating a mindset that perseveres through the inevitable discomforts of growth.

Long Term Always Defeats Short Term

Perseverance

Perseverance doesn’t guarantee immediate success, but it does make you achieve it in the long run.

In a world that celebrates immediacy, standing firm on a goal can seem old-fashioned. However, science supports that perseverance is a key factor in achieving meaningful goals. Angela Duckworth, a professor at the University of Pennsylvania, defines it as “Grit”, a combination of passion and long-term perseverance. Their studies show that this quality is a better predictor of success than talent or IQ.

Howard Schultz, former CEO of Starbucks, was rejected by more than 200 investors before he could launch his vision of a global coffee shop. Michael Jordan was excluded from his basketball team in high school; today, he is considered the best of all time, and at some point, he said, “I can accept failure, everyone fails at something, but I can’t accept not trying”. What defines them is not their talent, but their decision not to give up.

The Way to Success

My personal experience with triathlon has been a constant lesson in perseverance. It only took me 14 years to get on a podium in first place. I have trained in the rain, in extreme heat, in the cold, with muscle discomfort, with fatigue, and sometimes without motivation. But I understood that being consistent, even when there are no visible results, is what builds actual progress.

In the corporate environment, perseverance is just as essential. Successful teams are those that adapt, learn from failure, and move forward with resilience.

And persevering is not blindly insisting, but adjusting, improving, and keeping moving. Perseverance transforms desire into achievement. Whether it’s in sports, business, or personal life, moving forward every day, even a little, is what makes all the difference.

University. Summer Classes. Networking Class. The first day in my life, I learnt about a company named Cisco Systems and how they were starting to change the world. It triggered my curiosity, and I started to dream about working for Cisco. The journey to get there was long but satisfying. It included traveling around the world, delivering Cisco Training in three continents and three languages, and getting to know thousands of people. Then, I became a Network Consulting Engineer at Cisco… in 2009.

When I first stepped into the world of technology as a Network Consulting Engineer, my focus was clear: solve problems, build networks, and keep the world connected. I thrived on tackling complex challenges, working with global teams, and delivering solutions that powered businesses. But as my career evolved, so did my perspective. I began to see beyond the configurations and systems, recognizing that success wasn’t just about technology—it was about people. This realization sparked a journey that would redefine my career and purpose.

The Engineer’s Foundation

As a Network Consulting Engineer, I learned the importance of precision, process, and adaptability. Every day brought a new puzzle to solve, whether it was designing scalable solutions for Fortune 500 companies or troubleshooting critical issues under pressure. I collaborated with cross-functional teams across continents, ensuring seamless deployments and exceeding client expectations. It was an exhilarating chapter, but something kept nudging me—there must be more.

I realized that while I excelled at solving technical issues, I wanted to dive deeper into understanding the “why” behind them. What drove customers? What challenges did they face beyond the technical realm? How could I help them achieve their broader goals? These questions became the catalyst for my transition.

Stepping into Customer Success

Becoming a Customer Success Specialist was more than a career move—it was a mindset shift. I was no longer just a problem-solver; I was an advocate, a strategist, and a partner. In this role, I developed customer-centric strategies that ensured clients weren’t just using products but thriving with them.

I honed the art of listening deeply, aligning business objectives with technical capabilities, and measuring success not just in uptime but in outcomes. I led initiatives that boosted customer retention and satisfaction, leveraging analytics and SaaS metrics like Net Revenue Retention (NRR) to inform decisions. This role allowed me to see the full picture—how every interaction, big or small, shaped the customer journey.

I became what the market refers to as “Customer Obsessed”. I worked hard to exceed the customer requirements, and to help them in any way within my limitations and my company’s guidelines. I ensured we all walked the extra mile, for it is the only way to SUCCESS! Not only for the customer but for us, our company, our team, our people. I had, and still have, a clear idea of what we need to do to help our customers.

I became a technology expert first; then became an expert in translating customer needs into our services. Mapping these two is not easy because sometimes the customer does not have a clear idea, or because we cannot match their requirements fully. We then need to find a solution, without compromising, but working together, becoming a powerful team searching for answers, rather than distributing guilt. We need to be accountable, and indispensable; we need to be able to end our journey knowing that regardless of the result, we did all we could to the best of our capabilities. And, if needed, we will do it again tomorrow. Until the problem is solved. We need to strive. The beginning is not easy, but once we get moving, it will get easier.

From Specialist to Success Programs Manager

As my expertise grew, so did my desire to lead on a broader scale. Transitioning to a Success Programs Manager was a natural next step, and with it came the responsibility of crafting and scaling programs that empowered entire teams and organizations. I wasn’t just solving individual problems anymore; I was building frameworks to solve all problems.

I led large, high-impact teams, guiding them to create value for clients and stakeholders alike. Working closely with enterprise customers, including Fortune 500 companies, I spearheaded initiatives that drove retention, expansion, and unmatched customer satisfaction. I collaborated across departments—Product, Marketing, and Channel—to create cohesive strategies that aligned with business objectives and transformed how success was delivered.

What’s Next?

My journey from engineer to strategist, from solving problems to building solutions, has been nothing short of transformative. Each chapter has sharpened my skills, broadened my perspective, and deepened my commitment to driving customer success at every level.

The Power of Continuous Learning

Training and education aren’t just for school—they’re lifelong pursuits. Every new skill you acquire is a tool that sharpens your ability to adapt and excel. In today’s fast-paced environment, industries change, technologies evolve, and staying stagnant is no longer an option. I am revamping my networking knowledge, and learning Japanese and I even am willing to learn to ride an unicycle. The goal is to exercise the brain, as often, and as much as possible. Think of learning as your way of future-proofing your career. Each experience shapes your worldview and strengthens your ability to connect with others.

I have been consistently going for a quick ride on Tuesdays. It’s an 18-km lap that I call my ITT (Individual Time Trial) since I ride my Triathlon bike. Sometimes, I pretend I am racing against Remco Evenepoel or Matthiew Van der Poel (my saddle is an MVDP design). I am not only increasing the wattage I deliver, but I also feel stronger and more energized. I get excited on Mondays because there is only one more day to go ITT! I am learning to ride a bike with a singular geometry that is not easily understood the first 20 times you ride it. This 30-minute activity makes me HAPPY, makes me feel strong, and helps me stay motivated in my Job Hunting quest.

Harvard Medical School (I used to run around Harvard and MIT during winter) reports that aerobic exercises, like running and biking, play a crucial role in improving mental focus and cognitive function. In a study published in the Harvard Health Blog, Dr. John Ratey, an associate clinical professor of psychiatry at Harvard, explains that exercise increases levels of brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF), a protein that supports the growth of new neurons and enhances memory and learning. This helps to keep the brain sharp and improves our ability to concentrate on complex tasks.

Their study revealed that people who engaged in outdoor activities experienced a 50% boost in creative thinking compared to those who remained indoors. Biking and running, as they take place outdoors and often amidst greenery, offer an ideal combination for nurturing a focused mind.

Runners and cyclists often set personal goals—whether it’s achieving a personal best, completing a race, or tackling a challenging route—that requires dedication, discipline, and incremental effort. These same principles are essential for top achievement in career and personal goals. Take a Marathon for example. In the first 10 marathons I ran I focused on the first kilometer, then the first mile. Increasing to km #5, mile #5, the first hour… EXHAUSTING! Then Half-Marathon, km#30 (The Wall for most runners); until I saw the “1 MILE TO GO” sign in most marathons. I built resilience and endurance both physically and mentally… even emotionally! In the last 2 years, I started running the marathons thinking on the 26th mile, but I always start with the first step: I just need to place the right foot in front, now the left, now the right, the left… repeat! Before I realize I am crossing “THE WALL” with no lactic acid pain, no mental fatigue, and at an 8 mph average speed. After this, my pace slows down, but I start to smile, consciously. I make an effort to get a big smile on my face.

A study from the University of Illinois found that children and adults who engaged in regular physical activity scored higher on tests of executive function, a cognitive process essential for planning, decision-making, and achieving goals. This finding is especially relevant in today’s demanding work environments, where employees are expected to multitask and manage various projects. Biking and running cultivate a mindset that prioritizes both short-term and long-term goals, making participants more adept at navigating challenges and staying committed to their pursuits.

The Connection Between Outdoor Exercise and Happiness

I love biking, more than I love running. I love the way the wind in my face makes me feel free. and the speed and the open road, sun or rain, trees and horses, and cows, and even traffic all together make an experience very difficult to miss. These components make me hunger for more rides, every week, feeling the freedom and peace it brings to my life as I simply pedal… again, imagining myself competing against Roglic, Remco, or Matthiew Van der Poel. I even have a segment called “the remco Evenepoel” segment. Disclosure: I do not imagine myself competing against Pogacâr or Vingegaard, because they are already 3 or 4 minutes ahead of me and I need to catch them. Not bad, not bad at all.

Outdoor activities like biking and running have also been shown to have profound effects on mental well-being. The American Psychological Association published a study demonstrating that exercise releases endorphins, serotonin, and dopamine—neurotransmitters responsible for feelings of happiness and satisfaction. Dr. Kelly McGonigal, a psychologist and lecturer at Stanford, argues in her book, The Joy of Movement, that exercise provides a natural antidepressant effect by activating the body’s reward system.

In addition, a 2019 dissertation from the University of California, Berkeley, analyzed the effects of “green exercise” (outdoor activities in nature) on emotional health. It found that individuals who participated in outdoor activities reported lower levels of anxiety and depression than those who exercised indoors. Nature exposure further boosts the effects of exercise by lowering cortisol levels, reducing stress, and fostering a sense of well-being. The combination of physical activity and time outdoors makes activities like biking and running uniquely effective in promoting happiness and reducing stress.

Biking and running often involve social interactions that contribute to overall happiness and a sense of belonging. According to a study from the University of Michigan’s Institute for Social Research, people who participate in group physical activities report stronger social ties and a greater sense of community.
